Formerly named Holy Black (Santa Mavra) from the church of Santa Maura which was built by the Franks in the 13th century in the homonymous epithalassio fortress. The excavations made by archaeologist Dörpfeld argues that Lefkada is the real (Homer) Ithaca Odysseus. The present city of Lefkada is the third-from ancient times until today the island’s capital.
The history of Lefkada starts in the 7th century BC when the Corinthians create colony on the island. The island clearly has a long history before this time as they have found traces of the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and recently discovered Mycenaean tomb offering new challenges for archaeological research on the island. The German archaeologist William Dorpfeld (Wilhelm Dörpfeld) was the first to make excavations in Lefkada and formulated the theory that the island is Homer’s Ithaca.
