Leros is known as the island of Artemis. In 1309 the island was captured by Ioannites Ippotes who kept it until 1521 were it was again captured by the Turkish. Leros was the home of great local and national benefactors. Vasilios Nikolaidis, Nikolaos Tsiagadas, Panagiotis Trakkas, Theologos Markopoulos etc. Great men of Leros island are Emmanouil Gideon, George Rousos and Theologos Nikoloudis. In 1912 the island was captured by the Italian battleship “San Giorgio” during the Italian-Turkish war. After the Italian truce, English support arrives at Leros. The island will undergo German bombardments. In 26th of September, the glorious Greek torpedo “Queen Olga*” and the English “Interpid” are being sunk by German airplanes. In 18 November the island was captured after hard battles from the Germans who will stay until the 8th of May when Germany surrendered. The English captivity continued until 31 May 1947. In 7 March 1948 Leros united with the rest Dodekanisa in Greece.
